Golden...God This Award Doesn't Matter
The second annual Golden Gods Awards is set to take place once again in Los Angeles. While most metal fans and industry folk are all excited about finally having a heavy metal awards program, I could give two shits. Now before I get criticized let it be known that I strongly oppose all awards shows/programs. I do think that anything publicizing heavy metal can't be all bad in the grand scheme of things. Even the Grammys having a heavy metal catagory isn't terrible either, even though it is a joke. Metal is the best form of music and the most therapeutic way of self-expression from any genre of music, period. There is no other form of musical entertainment that has a more rabid fan base and loyal supporters than heavy metal. While I can win any argument over that claim, I'm here to talk about awards shows so that's what I'll do.
The Grammys were fucked from the first year they had a heavy metal catagory. Jethro Tull winning best hard rock/metal performance of 89' explained that the mainstream masses had no idea what was going on within the metal community. The Golden God Awards on the other hand does, at least more than the Grammys. Here's my beef with awarding heavy metal artists, there's no reason to. Award shows don't matter to me because I like what I like and personally don't care if I'm the only one who does. This goes for music, movies, tv shows, etc. I learned a long time ago that more often than not, I disagree with what the masses likes. So even though music industry people and fans alike get to vote on the nominees, I still will not be watching nor checking to see who wins.
Obviously this is just my opinion and I'm sure a lot of bands enjoy being recognized with a tangible item that will collect dust on their mantle. For the most part, I feel like this is the attitude of most of the bands as well. What matters most is that fans come out to the shows and have a good time, maybe buy a t-shirt in the process so the band can eat that night. Impacting music in a way that starts something new or creating something that gets a fan through a hard time is also a feeling that an award cannot top. These are just a couple of the reasons why I think awards don't really matter to metal bands for the most part. I'll admit, it does have to feel pretty good at the end of the day to be recognized for your efforts. So while I disagree with giving out awards for something that is so rewarding in itself, I do understand why a metal band would appreciate a Golden Gods Award. If nothing else, I'm sure chicks will dig a stonehenge statue.
