Overkill was always looked upon, at least in my mind, as the runt of the 80’s thrash scene. They’re one of those bands that most thrash fans like but admit to not really listening to. They never really got the respect and praise I feel they deserve primarily because of the big four. Like anything else that emerges within the metal genre, that scene just became too saturated. By the time the big four bands hit their peak, metal was on its way out and thrash was all but dead by 91’. No matter, Overkill kept on through the 90s and into the new millennium, finally releasing a better than average Overkill record.
Ironbound doesn’t ever try to be something it’s not and Overkill doesn’t try anything new here. What they have done is adapted with the times. This is not a record you would pinpoint as an 80s album but it’s not one that has modern metal sprayed all over it. Overkill has blended both and finally sounds hungry again. Singer Bobby “Blitz” Ellsworth has one of the most distinctive voices in metal and can still belt out his trademark high pitch screams. Ironbound lacks any filler tracks and instead opts for one kickass track after another. Bottom line is Overkill has released the best album in over a decade and arguably one of the best in their catalog. Be sure to catch them this April on tour.
